Yes I have more than 15 ideas, so added them on just to spoil you. The possibilities are endless & depending on your theme & budget, it can be hard to know where to start! The best place? Ask me what I've done in the past & who I can recommend to perfectly suit YOUR wedding day.
OK so I look like I've not a care in the world here, but let me tell you - I've been where you are, with the frustrations of planning a quirky wedding.
When I got married in 2006, I arranged & designed the day how I & my husband wanted it to be. Some elements were more traditional (such as colour schemes), however other elements we wanted to inject our personalities into (including food, believe it or not we were one of the first couples to have sausage & mash for our wedding breakfast instead of traditional chicken or fish - it was LUSH!).
Sadly, some of our choices were met with raised eyebrows & sniffs of disdain by members of our family. In fact, we didn't get married in the venue that we wanted, because we were told in no uncertain terms, that some family members wouldn't travel that far (we had picked a beautiful hotel on the edge of Ullswater in the Lake District & at the time, lived in Hertfordshire).
So instead we compromised, Mr M found a beautiful barn in Burnham Beeches near Windsor, & we continued to arrange a day that we felt reflected our personalities.
Friends & family provided various elements, & we even chose every song that the DJ played (although now, having worked in the industry, I feel I should apologise to him for being SO controlling and effectively telling him how to do his job haha!) Even now, people will talk of our wedding and how relaxed it was.
No drama, no fuss, just good times.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing. While my wedding day was amazing, I can't help but have regrets that my original plans were shelved.
I don't want this to happen to you! It's your wedding day, and it should be done your way. Bugger what anyone else thinks, if it makes you happy then do it.
But just HOW do you do that? How do you put together a wedding that's full of your personality, full of your passions, full of love, full of your chosen guests, while trying to continue working & living your life?

If you're looking for an alternative wedding venue for your big day, then make sure your first port of call is your wedding planner. Any planner worth their sequins will have a list to hand of all the best venues in the area.
If your theme is more boho & festival, then an outdoor venue will suit you perfectly such as woodlands, tipis or total dry blank canvas hire of local fields.
If you're going for gothic & brooding, then get the info on castles, converted churches or stately homes.
If your big day is going to be blinged to the max, a formal affair, then a stately home or hotel will create a beautiful backdrop.
Perhaps you're going for the industrial chic look, with an edgy approach - in this case I'd suggest checking out old converted factories or industrial spaces, all that exposed brick & steel beams!
Of course the venue is just a small part of your wedding day, you need your wedding suppliers to get on board with your vision too. The best & easiest way to pull everything together will be to employ the services of a wedding planner who shares your ideas & understands just what it is that you want to achieve.

I've said it countless times before but... it's YOUR big day, so you should be planning things your way. But I do appreciate that's easier said than done!
Every person wants to be the one to give you that idea that you'd not yet considered, & to get a mention or credit on your wedding day. Bless their cotton socks for trying to help!
I guess it's a bit like when you're a new parent, & everyone has some "useful" (yep, I used the bunny ears) advice & opinions to pass on. Just nod & say thanks. Keep in mind that your wedding day is a representation of you & your other half. If a well meaning family member, friend or colleague has a nugget of information to impart, then that's nice, but you DON'T need to take it & use it if you don't want to.
You could say "thanks but that doesn't fit with our vision of our wedding. It's a great idea though!" How diplomatic am I??
As a planner, one of the most useful services that I provide is the admin (or, as it's affectionately known, wedmin). I respond to emails & messages on the detail of your wedding day. This takes a lot of pressure off you as, let's face it, you should be enjoying this part of your engagement - not stuck answering questions on why you chose this colour scheme & wouldn't such-and-such other theme suit better.
Another place you may find unsolicited advice is online wedding forums & Facebook wedding groups. In theory, & in fact the majority of the time, these are great places to bounce ideas around & have a semi-anonymous rant about the frustrations of planning a wedding. But they can also cause some negative reactions, especially when you're having a brilliantly quirky wedding. You know if it's not someone's scene that they'll tell you that! Ignore them. it's your day, do it your way.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that when you're a wonderfully alternative couple, you'll most likely get some not so wonderful feedback. You just need to ignore it & carry on creating a day that you & your partner will cherish memories of forever.

It's now peak wedding season for me & I am in my element!! Every weekend is a different wedding or event, sometimes 2 or 3 days in a row, & I am ridiculously excited by each one. Every one has its own theme & approach, the little details setting each apart from the next.
This months upcoming events are R+J's wedding on Saturday 6 July, K+A's wedding on 20th July, J's wedding on 28th July.
I also have photoshoots on 10th July & 15th July with around 20 suppliers on 2 very different themes.
Then I have family time with the boys, PLUS of course getting in enough rest that my chronic illness doesn't stop me in my tracks (again!)
It's a tough balance, work life against family life, plus working whilst ill, but this is the job I trained for. This is the job I ADORE. This is my dream job & while I might be slower on my feet than I used to be, I think I'm doing OK. It's a challenge, & one I'm happy to face head on. Let's do this!

I can't believe it's been 3 months since I last blogged - where does the time go?? Well it disappears in a whirlwind of weddings, prep, events, prep, wedding shows, marketing, admin... you get the picture haha! But here I am, ready to wax lyrical about the wedding shows I currently have planned for 2020. I'm sure more will be added as the year goes along but this is the score right now.
First up, & probably the most exciting, is my very first Anti Wedding Show. Now, just to clarify, I'm not anti wedding. Lord no, that'd be shooting myself in the foot somewhat! No, what I'm "anti" is pigeon-holing, forcing couples to fit with a certain theme from beginning to end.
"Rustic wedding" - "vintage wedding" - "traditional wedding" - what's "on trend"... etc etc. Themes that expect you to just fit perfectly with. What we call in the industry "cookie cutter weddings".
Now don't get me wrong, themes are a great way to START. I like a bit of lace (vintage), I love skulls (gothic), hessian ... actually hessian can sod off, it used to hurt my hands horribly when I did decor haha! But good for a rustic wedding.
But NONE of us are a set "theme" through and through,a re we? We like different elements, different flowers, different dresses (if dresses at all! Why not a jump suit?)
Why should we be JUST looking at 1 theme to fit the whole of our wedding?
Well we SHOULDN'T. We are all different, made of different elements, our personalities are different... so I came up with the Anti Wedding Show, a place to celebrate those differences.
As I say over at The Alternative Wedding Planner "your wedding YOUR way". The show in Bedford on Sunday 12 January will be a HUGE celebration of differences.
The other show I have planned is over at the GORGEOUS Flaxbourne Gardens in Aspley Guise. On Sunday 14 June, and then again Sunday 20 September. now if you've not been to Flaxbourne yet, then you HAVE to. Seriously, it's like a real life Wonderland! From the moment you walk in, you're transported into another world. You enter the grounds through a hidden grotto, complete with waterfall, then go past lakes, a moated castle, through tunnels filled with flowers... It's something else. You can get married on the main lawns, then party the evening away with you guests in the beautiful marquee that holds up to 250 guests. So if you're looking for a venue that's different to anywhere else, this is the one for you.

As a wedding planner, I get to see SO many fun & exciting approaches to weddings & couples never cease to amaze me in their creativity! There is no limit on the theme you choose for your wedding, so what are YOU going for?
Perhaps you've chosen a colour scheme & everything is tied in with that, from flowers to chair bows to bridesmaids dresses. How pretty is that gonna look?! Love it!
Or perhaps you've decided to really go to town & let your personality shine through. From festival weddings with ribbons & flamingos, to gothic weddings accented by skulls & black roses, to colourful 50s Rockabilly... Then there's weddings based on your favourite film or TV show, such as roaring 20s Peaky Blinders or Lord of the Rings.
What I'm trying to say is it's your day so you need to do things YOUR way. Too many people lose sight of what matters on their wedding day - it's the marriage of 2 people who love each other, & no-one but they can say how their wedding day should be done.
