From a wedding planning point of view, 2020’s trend looks to be... bucking the trend! Individuality, huge injections of personality, & having your wedding YOUR way are themed that are coming through time & again in my planning jobs. Stay true to you! I’m loving this new trend. From gothic venues decorated a la Dracula, to llamas, petting zoos & music festivals at the reception, the possibilities are ENDLESS. I’m loving the honour of being tasked with finding vendors to bring such amazing visions to life. No 2 days are the same, & no 2 weddings are the same. 2020 is the year of being YOU.
A bit of background - I’ve been in the wedding industry around 8 years, organising events for over 20 years. My business is Beckie Melvin Weddings - I’m a qualified & award-winning wedding planner, organising around 20 weddings a year across the Home Counties. I specialise in alternative, quirky weddings - because every couple deserves a wedding as unique as they are. For more info, see www.beckiemelvinevents.co.uk
Now, this is a subject I am ALWAYS talking about, so please forgive me if you've heard me say this already! But I think it's so important to talk about just why a wedding planner will be THE best decision you make for your wedding.
So with all this in mind, what you waiting for? Get in touch with me today & let's have a chat about creating YOUR dream wedding day.
Don't believe me? Then look here for my testimonials, with more added each month *proud face* Bxx
I thought it might be nice to give you a little insight into my background, & some fun facts about me that you may not know. I hope you like what you read!
I was born in Barnet, raised in Potters Bar, & lived in Hertfordshire until 2012. My first flat after I moved out was above John Lewis in Welwyn Garden City town centre. I loved that place! It was cheap, & BIG for a 1 bedroom flat, myself & Mr M held a lot of very noisy, drunken parties there. Sorry neighbours!!
I went to a private school in Welwyn. I know, you wouldn't guess to hear me speak ;) But if you listen to WHAT I say, rather than how I say it, then I think you'll realise that I do in fact have a pretty good brain in this blonde head.
I left school in 1998 with 13 awesome GCSEs & 4 pretty darn good A Levels. I didn't go to uni, instead chose to work as Executive Assistant to a director at Chase Farm Hospital in Enfield. First ever job & I had my own office with my name on the door. BOOM!!! My role there was exciting & challenging, my organisational skills (& obsession with list-making) meaning I would tackle every task head on, proudly becoming my Director's right-hand woman.
I stayed in the NHS for around a decade, before trying out work for Tesco HQ in Welwyn Garden City. I enjoyed being nearer home, & earning better money, but I never felt that I fitted the corporate environment. Although I am grateful for the opportunities I was granted, meaning I could keep honing my organisational skills, perfecting my diary management, & generally learning to love being efficient.
By chance, I got made redundant in 2012 (yes, it was a positive thing!). I used the money I got from payout to set up my own events business, using what I'd learned over my years of working in the offices. I specifically wanted to be involved in the wedding business so took courses in Wedding Planning to help me forward, & was hooked. I adore this industry even though it's changed significantly since I started.
On a personal level, getting to where I am has been a bit of a challenge. In 2015 I became very unwell & after 2 years of tests & appointments, I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia with M.E. (also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, but I hate that phrase as the fatigue is just a small part of the condition). My health can be very up & down, as I throw myself into my work & then suffer if I'm not careful. A few times I've lost entire months as I just can't get up to do anything, but I have NEVER missed a job.
In 2017 I met the owner of Flaxbourne Gardens in Aspley Guise. I went over to discuss running wedding shows there, to put the wedding venue on the local map. Within a fortnight, Paul had me signed up as the Wedding & Events Coordinator for Flaxbourne. I'm not lying when I say it's my dream job! I'm very lucky to work with someone who shares my business ethos, & understands me not only with the challenges I face, but my need to keep on creating dream wedding days.
Going forward, I'm excited. There are new challenges to be had both in my own wedding planning business, & at Flaxbourne Gardens. I'm seriously excited to see what the future brings for me. It's my 40th birthday in May 2020 & I honestly think it's not a cliche to say that life starts at 40. But maybe I'll revisit that thought AFTER the event!
Thanks for reading, I hope this gives you a bit of an insight into what I do, where I've been, & where I'm going to. I'm an open book so anything else you think you'd like to know then just ask! I'm not shy :) Thanks for your continued support, here's to making more memories TOGETHER. Beckie xx
OK I warn you now, my life isn't glamorous - the admin & paperwork that goes into making your wedding run faultlessly, well it ain't pretty! But as it's so important, I don't mind so much. If you want to know more about what I do then drop me a line on firstname.lastname@example.org
I check my emails regularly throughout the day, with notebook & pen close to hand to keep track of everything that needs to be done. I'm ALWAYS making lists & my love of naughty notebooks & lovely pens helps.
No 2 days are the same, but admin, research & emails feature heavily. I use a mix of resources to research new venues & suppliers, if I want a break from the screens then I'll pick up an alternative magazine such as Rock & Roll Bride & enjoy an hour or so of reading about talented wedding specialists, & the amazing services that they provide for quirky wedding days.
When I'm not working, I love shopping for Irregular Choice shoes, & binge watching Netflix. Current obsession is Pretty Little Liars, only 10 years late to that party haha! I'm not a late bird though, so all tucked up in bed with cocoa by 9pm on a school night, it's tiring all this wedding business. I LOVE what I do & every day am very thankful that this is my job <3
So now you can see how dedicated I am to designing dream wedding days, get in touch on email@example.com to arrange a consultation. Bxx
I'm going to start this by saying that I don't want to scare you, or to tell you what to do. However I've noticed a big rise in the number of scammers popping up, especially on social media in wedding groups, dedicating their time to luring you into their clutches with too-good-to-be-true deals & grabbing your cash. These are just some ways to spot a scammer, & how to avoid getting stung. If you've any worries, then get in touch on firstname.lastname@example.org
Have you heard of a celebrant before? Before I get started on the benefits of using one, how about I tell you just what a celebrant is?
To be legally valid, a UK marriage ceremony must be performed by an authorised person (for example, a registrar, a vicar or a priest) and be witnessed by two people. This means couples must choose between: an approved religious ceremony, a registry office ceremony, or a registrar who will attend the wedding at a licensed venue.
With this in mind, a celebrant led ceremony means you won't be legally married but you CAN personalise you service, with your own vows, & elements such as hand fasting (tying yours & beloved hands together with ribbons), sand ceremony (couple mixes sands within a glass to symbolise unity), butterfly release...
You can also have your celebrant ceremony ANYWHERE - in the woods, on the beach, in the gardens of your childhood house... You're not tied to a legally recognised venue, which opens up the possibilities so much!
There are SO many ways to create your own ceremony, a number of my couples opt to take 2 witnesses with them to the registry office, have a small, legal service & then have a celebrant led ceremony in front of their guests. To the untrained eye, you wouldn't know this pretty ceremony wasn't legal, & there are countless options available to you with a celebrant led ceremony.
I have worked with several celebrants over the years & would be happy to discuss options with you, so if this sounds like something you'd like for your own wedding day then please get in touch on email@example.com
Well, if you're reading this this you've very sensibly decided to consider employing the services of a wedding planner. Good idea! but before you rush to sign contracts & hand over cash, here are a few questions you should ask - & to save repeating myself in a later post, I've given you my own answers too. I hope this helps put your mind at rest, send me an email on firstname.lastname@example.org so we can chat further about designing YOUR dream wedding day. Bxx
Naturally, this list isn't exhaustive. If you have ANYTHING else you'd like to know, please do get in touch on email@example.com - I look forward to hearing from you soon. Bxx
Picture the scene. You've booked me as your wedding planner, you've told me what you want your wedding day to look like, I've promised you I'll create a mood board & colour palette for you, but what do I do to create these lovely bits of eye candy for you? Well I go to my favourite resources!
I've listed my top 5 below, but to be honest there are about 20-30 places I use to design & create weddings haha.
Pinterest - first stop for me is Pinterest, where I'll create a secret board & then comes the fun bit... Sourcing images that match your theme. Its really exciting to see a group of images right there in front of you, giving a little glimpse into just how special your day will look! I then grab all these images together & create a story book, mood board & colour palette to really get your pulse rating.
Rock n Roll Bride mag - I'm sure you've heard of this publication, if not then please do check it out! Rock & Roll Bride is the brainchild of Kat, it's the only specifically alternative magazine in circulation. Kat also writes a blog (of the same name, find it here: *click here* ) & even a book published. If alternative, quirky weddings are your scene then check her out, you won't regret it!
Rock My Wedding blog - Again, Rock My Wedding is brilliantly inspirational for anyone planning an unconventional wedding. (*click here* ) I love looking through everyone's amazing weddings & collating ideas & inspiration for my own couples.
Unconventional Wedding website - This website is PACKED with inspiration & wedding suppliers, all based around, well, unconventional weddings. (*Click here*) They feature real weddings, have wedding suppliers, ideas for wedding themes, a blog... pretty much anything you need to create a unique wedding.
My own wonderful wedding suppliers list - now of course, I wouldn't be ANY kind of planner if I didn't mention those who time & again pick up my calls, take my couple's & my ideas, & create AMAZING wedding days. My suppliers are without doubt the backbone to my business. After all, what kind of wedding would you have without suppliers to realise your dream? So a bit of a public THANK YOU to everyone of them who helps me daily
Right, now you've seen a bit if an insight into how I work, aren't you excited about us working together to design & create a wedding as unique as you are? Email or call & let's have a chat about just how quirky YOUR wedding will be. Bxx

Yes I have more than 15 ideas, so added them on just to spoil you. The possibilities are endless & depending on your theme & budget, it can be hard to know where to start! The best place? Ask me what I've done in the past & who I can recommend to perfectly suit YOUR wedding day.
OK so I look like I've not a care in the world here, but let me tell you - I've been where you are, with the frustrations of planning a quirky wedding.
When I got married in 2006, I arranged & designed the day how I & my husband wanted it to be. Some elements were more traditional (such as colour schemes), however other elements we wanted to inject our personalities into (including food, believe it or not we were one of the first couples to have sausage & mash for our wedding breakfast instead of traditional chicken or fish - it was LUSH!).
Sadly, some of our choices were met with raised eyebrows & sniffs of disdain by members of our family. In fact, we didn't get married in the venue that we wanted, because we were told in no uncertain terms, that some family members wouldn't travel that far (we had picked a beautiful hotel on the edge of Ullswater in the Lake District & at the time, lived in Hertfordshire).
So instead we compromised, Mr M found a beautiful barn in Burnham Beeches near Windsor, & we continued to arrange a day that we felt reflected our personalities.
Friends & family provided various elements, & we even chose every song that the DJ played (although now, having worked in the industry, I feel I should apologise to him for being SO controlling and effectively telling him how to do his job haha!) Even now, people will talk of our wedding and how relaxed it was.
No drama, no fuss, just good times.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing. While my wedding day was amazing, I can't help but have regrets that my original plans were shelved.
I don't want this to happen to you! It's your wedding day, and it should be done your way. Bugger what anyone else thinks, if it makes you happy then do it.
But just HOW do you do that? How do you put together a wedding that's full of your personality, full of your passions, full of love, full of your chosen guests, while trying to continue working & living your life?
The answer is simple - you speak to me.
I gained my wedding planning qualifications 5 years ago & have since helped countless couples, as well as winning an award for my services (4 times nominated, just a bit proud!).
